Age: 37
History: wiki
Personality:
✘ NEGATIVE.
reckless.
More than anything, Mulder cares about the truth - far more than he cares about following the rules or keeping himself safe. If doing something dangerous will solve a case, then he'll do it. If it feels like staying awake for days at a time will help him get his missing partner back, then he's done sleeping. Left to his own devices, Mulder will put his ass on the line without a second thought. He'll run his mouth without concern for the consequences - whether that means trying to speak eloquent truth to power or taunting suspects with threats of misery in prison.
obsessive.
Related to his recklessness, Mulder's tendency is to go all in on anything he cares about (and slouch his way through everything he doesn't). He doesn't leave work behind when he gets home, or to whatever motel is currently masquerading as home; his apartment is messy, full of yet more paranormal books and news clippings and videos, while motel rooms are the perfect setting to call his partner at 3 AM and discuss the case more. He might balk, in casual conversation, at the idea that he doesn't know how to stop (he plays sports! he watches sports! he stops for sports!)but he is aware that this is a place he struggles. It's why he's no longer a profiler - for him, getting into the heads of serial killers was far easier than getting out of them again.
alienated.
Human connection is the defining feature of Mulder's life: having it, losing it, longing for it. His overriding interests and career path began with the loss of his sister, and they ultimately led him to a basement office so removed from the rest of the Bureau that he can watch porn down there without anybody noticing. He's a lonely man, someone with few connections outside the world of conspiracy.
It's easy to dismiss his lack of friendships and sardonic jokes as a desire to avoid social entanglements, but he generally tends to be friendly until other people fail to be friendly back. Frequently, the shift comes when his interests come into play. For a man who's desperate to be believed, to find people who will validate the often-traumatic experiences he's had, the implication that his theories are laughable is a low blow. That's much of what makes his partner, Scully, so important to him: while she frequently finds fault with his belief in the paranormal, she approaches questions with scientific rigor and gives Mulder's theories the same consideration she would anyone else's.
✘ POSITIVE.
relentless.
At age 12, Mulder witnessed his sister's abduction by aliens from their home. Decades later, figuring out what happened to her - and getting to the bottom of untold numbers of other unexplained phenomena - is his life's work. Mulder's fixated on the nature of truth and uncovering what there is to uncover about strange occurrences. His dogged persistence makes him an excellent investigator, but the man doesn't really know when to stop. He perseveres in the fact of obstacles, from KEEP OUT signs to a global cabal bent on covering up state secrets.
empathetic.
Mulder's ability to think things through from others' perspectives is vital to his work in the FBI. He's particularly quick to build rapport with witnesses and get the information he and Scully need to solve cases. But he's not just there to get what he wants - not when he's talking to victims, anyway. (The local police are another story; more than once, he ends a conversation by walking away without any real social niceties.) He genuinely comes to care for the people involved in the cases he works, determined to find them the justice and validity no one ever gave him.
competent.
With everything else in mind, it's easy to dismiss Mulder as a complete disaster. People at the Bureau call him "Spooky Mulder," and it's not a compliment - he's known for being a little bit of a crackpot whose interest in aliens looks comical to a lot of agents. But it's worth noting that as a general rule, Mulder's good at his job. He can and does close cases, albeit often with conclusions that aren't always popular, and his profiles catch killers. That he could start investigating X-files at all is a testament to the fact that he's impressed people throughout his career: at Quantico, in the Investigative Support Unit, and then with the FBI's Violent Crimes section.
He's also capable of keeping fish alive, which is harder than it looks.
Powers/Abilities: Mulder is an adult human without supernatural ability. He is also, however, an FBI field agent of over a decade - athletic, trained in everything from tactical driving skills to investigation techniques, and capable (if unwilling) when it comes to bureaucratic nonsense like paperwork. He possesses a broad knowledge of esoterica, the occult, and the paranormal, and he studied psychology at Oxford. Long story short, he's equal parts jock and nerd.
Regret: Mulder regrets that he couldn't save his younger sister from being abducted.
Suitability: Mulder's entire life is about getting to the bottom of seemingly impossible problems. He has a strong background in investigation, an undeniable tenacity for goals that interest him, and motivation to spare in this particular situation: He's spent years trying to find (and hopefully rescue) his sister. Despite any misgivings he might have about the setup, Mulder's desire to stop Samantha's abduction means he'll be an eager asset to Viveca and Degar for as long as they can keep him convinced of the reward. And under the circumstances, he has almost* every reason in the world to believe.
* He was recently almost eaten by a giant fungus that made him hallucinate in order to keep him from getting away. As long as he can convince himself he's not still getting digested in a cave, we're all good.
